Kicked Back Classics 2006

The Performing Arts Foundation of Powhatan presented to an almost "sold-out" house, The Richmond Symphony's Kicked Back Classics series on Friday, September 22nd. The concert was held at The Village Building on Route 13 (3910 Old Buckingham Rd.) in Powhatan and began at 7:30 p.m.

The one hour performance by over 30 musicians, was led by the Richmond Symphony's Assistant Conductor, Sarah Hatsuko Hicks, who joined the Symphony last fall. Hicks' vision for Kicked Back Classics when she joined was "entry level classical concerts a way to encounter this music in an environment that is relaxed for the audience." By all accounts from previous performance reviews, Hicks has achieved her goal. The casual concert in September included selections ranging from Joplin's "The Entertainer", to Daugherty's "Mxyzptlk from Metropolis Symphony", to Copeland's "Old America Songs".

Even without a baton in her hand, Hicks does not come to Richmond empty handed. She brings with her a wealth of talent and experience from working with the now defunct Florida Philharmonic to teaching and conducting at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and working with the Westminster Choir in Princeton, New Jersey.

Adding to Hicks' interestingly rich history is her background. Born in Tokyo thirty years ago and raised in Hawaii, she was a child prodigy concert pianist who turned to conducting after developing tendonitis at the age of sixteen. Hicks is married to Paul LaFollette, a French horn player in the Richmond Symphony.
